Majo

Majo is trail royalty as she has dominated almost all the major trail events in the country.  She’s set to conquer a new challenge as she’ll be joining The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) this year.  Let’s support Majo’s journey to UTMB.

Everything About Majo

When you hit the trail races, you’ll definitely notice Majo.  You’ll see her blitzing the trail alongside the top runners in the country and more often than not, you’ll see her on top of the podium.  She’s one of the friendliest and freshest faces on the trail.  Majo just loves the trail and everything about it.  She won’t hesitate to share a tip or two to newbie trail runners and cheer for other runners as well.  There’s a twinkle in her eyes every time she’s on the trail, which has become a part her life.

Maria Josephine Liao, Majo to her buddies, was part of the UST Mountaineering Club before she got into running in 2008.  She also started joining road races until her love of the mountains eventually got her into ultra trail running in 2012.  The Philippines have a lot of wonderful and challenging trails. With a lot of her peers also into trail running, she has grown to love the trails and went on to be among our top female ultra trail runners.

Majo at Work

Like most of us, Majo has a regular day job as a college professor at Trinity University of Asia. She completed a degree in Medical Technology and practiced as a Registered Medical Technologist for some time before finding her passion in teaching. This 2017 she also started her Master’s degree in Public Health at UERM. Despite a regular job, she maintains a good work and life balance.  She’s a self supported runner and she has brought the spotlight to female trail runners.  One of her goals is to grow the participation of woman in local trail events.  Majo also wants to prove that Filipino Runners can make it in the world stage and that Filipina (Women) can be at par with men around the world.  Recent trend also show that female runners has now a bigger representation in top 10 of major races.

Majo and her UTMB Journey

UTMB is the perfect vehicle to convey her message of woman empowerment on trails.  She qualified recently for the UTMB 2017 and she is on the verge of becoming the first Filipina to finish the World Cup of mountain marathons.

Held yearly between August and September, The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), an ultramarathon in the Alps, follows the hiking trail of Tour du Mont Blanc through France, Italy and Switzerland. This is a challenging time of the year, there is rain, snow, and cold winds at altitudes that has less oxygen to breathe. Distance is 171 kilometers with a total of 10,300 meters ascent, still one of the most difficult foot race in Europe. The route is an 11 day trek, but the fastest can blaze through in 21 hours of non-stop running.
